How Do You Choose the Right Artist for a Children's Book?
I'm looking to publish a children's book and want it to stand out with engaging visuals. What factors should I consider when exploring illustration services for kids books? Are there common pitfalls to avoid when hiring illustrators, and how do you ensure their style fits the story’s tone? Would love to hear from authors or illustrators with experience!

Choosing the right artist for a children’s book is crucial. It’s not just about pretty pictures it’s about style matching the tone of the story, having illustrations that suit the age group (bright and simple for young kids; more detailed for older ones), and ensuring the artwork complements rather than distracts from the text. Also important are consistency, the ability to work with revisions, good communication, and how the artist handles color, mood, and visual pacing (full-page spreads vs spot illustrations).
I have a deep interest in writing and editing, and I work as a professional book editor with Whitewolf Publishers.
